Long Break; New Drawing

Well, on 1-1-2013 I de-cellophane'd a new Moleskine, hopefully to draw something every day. That lasted about five days (yay! & boo!). I can still keep pace if I downsize my former ambition to once per week.

This is today's entry. Done in a Starbucks in Studio City waiting to meet friends for a rehearsal for another Startup Weekend, this time to be held in the San Fernando Valley at a mansion formerly owned and occupied by Frank Sinatra. Wicked cool, huh? That's right!

Studio City had an interesting vibe. Everything is very walkable for locals. At the B&N I struck up a conversation with a young lady who was reading a Jimmy Page bio. Her favorite Led Zeppelin album is III... how cool is that? That's the album that introduced me to the genius and artistry of my favorite band.

Tangerine for the win!

Goodness Knows...

...my drawing skills are rusty. Undaunted though, I did this quick sketch of a space shuttle in flight. Real quick! I've been pressed into action as a result of recently entering a writing challenge sponsored by Santa Clarita Valley Internet Marketers meetup

Anyway, for the challenge, I will post for 30 days, blog entries of at least 351 words. All content must be original, and I must include a properly labelled "image". I did not want to mess around with stock images, but my post needed art, so I said, what the hell, I made art. Yay!

My other blog, the "wordsy blog" is www.whitewingcrow.com in case you are interested.

Just a warning, but maybe just an idle threat, I may be using the challenge to do more "support sketches" and the likely more cross-posts.

Regarding the drawing itself... I was pretty happy with my application of the approach I learned from Will Weston for the non-organic aspects of the drawing. However, I was much less pleased with the execution on the "organic" exhaust plume, which in my reference photo was a very atmospheric, rainbow-y effect. I confess to not having had a clue. I may reach follow up with artisit friends on how they'd approach this challenge... Any ideas (from my artist friends)?

Maybe Carmageddon

Maybe carmageddon will become a full-fledged holiday.

Passing part of this nice day, not driving, but drawing at my office. Being at the office on a Saturday is bad form, but it is nice here, and I am successfully not driving, so that's a good thing.

Wait a minute, what am I thinking? I live north of the Sepulveda Pass, I can drive anywhere I want (except, of course, down there, but why would I want to do that?). You know what, screw that, no driving for me.

Everything's fine; I think I'll stay put and draw - above the fray, in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Nothing if not Versatile

It was too hot today in Santa Clarita to do anything except evaporate. It was too hot even, to draw. So what did I do?  I defied the heat and did draw anyway.

For this scene at the mall, when I started to draw, I was in the shade. However, since it was near noon, the angles changed quickly and I was soon engulfed in the firey maw of the day. Scrambling feverishly with pens and markers I hastened to finish. Dermal trauma notwithstanding, I'm happy with the result.

As if that weren't artistic accomplishment enough, I also got to use the phrase "engulfed in the firey maw of the day" in a sentence. I've been meaning to do that for a while. Like has been said, I'm nothing if not versatile.
